This Zarbula sundial painted at Le Pinet in 1842 was restored by E & N Peyot. It is behind the building at 2 Jerusalem a tiny lane off rue St Claude below the Marie, school and church facing south east overlooking the valley over a private garden.
This sundial is a classic Zarbula dial, painted at the peak of his career. It has many of the Zarbula folk art style features: two exotic birds, flower wreath, sun, IHS, arched frame, motto, date (1842), signature (ZGF). The Peyrots restored the dial beautifully from its faded eroded state. The ochre colours are deliberately muted to the respect the age of the sundial.
The motto is a common one "Sans le soliel je ne suis rein et toi sans Dieu tu ne peux rein"
When I was taking a picture here in 2005, a very old lady who had been peeking through the lace curtain window came out to question my trespass. I indicated the Zarbula sundial and said I was from Canada to take pictures of Zarbula sundials. She remembered her great (great?) grandfather telling her as a child that he had commissioned Zarbula to paint the sundial. I spoke little French; she spoke no English but we communicated. This year I was more respectful of her private property but we did not meet again.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
