Major General Panfilov was killed in action during the Battle of Moscow in November 1941 while commanding the 316th Rifle Division. The ill-equipped Soviet infantry were called upon to block the advance of German armor near Dubosekovo.
All but three men died, who were later proclaimed heroes and nicknamed panfilovtsy after their commanding officer. The 316th was subsequently renamed as the 8th Guards Rifle Division.
