Just to the south of this bridge the old North Oxford Canal veered off to the west to follow the contours round the hill. When the Grand Union Canal reached Braunston from London in 1805 it was decided to shorten the route of the Oxford canal and at the same time widen it so that two wide beam cargo boats could pass. This is the first point north of Braunston that the canal was diverted from its original course. The straightening here required the digging of a cutting some 650m long and the building of two new bridges, one of which is Bridge 84. Coming north from Braunston the bridge seems huge, and indeed it is compared with the other brick arch bridges passed under. The span of some 12m allows two wide beam boats to pass with ease and leaves sufficient room for the tow path. The old course of the canal is beyond the railway embankment to the west but can be more easily seen north and west of the next bridge, bridge 95, also very impressive in its own right, where the railway course crosses the old canal on the flat. The old canal is very silted up and clogged with aquatic vegetation.
