KOREAN PAGODA GARDEN
This stone monument was constructed in the Republic of Korea by the alumni of Yonsei University Medical College and shipped to Canada in 1985. It was moved to this site in 1998.
It expresses the great honour and respect in which three early Canadian Christian Medical Missionaries are held to their dedication and service to the people of the Korean peninsula.
Dr. Oliver R. Avison (1860-1956) Born in Yorkshire, England, he was both a graduate of and a teacher at the Toronto School of Medecine, affiliated at the time with Victoria University. He served korea from 1893-1934 in seoul, founding Severance Union medical College and Hospital, and Chosun Christian College, now Yonsei University. His work in korea was continued by his son, Dr. Douglas Avison, who was born in Pusan in 1893, was trained at the univerity of Toronto in pediatrics, and served at Severance Hospital until 1940.
Dr. Stanley H. Martin (11890-1941) Born in St. John's, Newfoundland and a graduate of Queen's medical college, he was designated as a missionary from the Orillia Presbyterian Church. He served Korea from 1916-1940 in Manchuria and in Seoul. He was a pioneer in the field of tuberculosis and was a great docter at Severance Hospital, now Yonsei Medical Center.
Dr. Florence J. Murray (1894-1975) Born in Pictou Landing, Nova Scotia, she served Korea from 1921-1969 in many districts from north-eastern China to Hamheung, Wonju, Seoul and Taegu. She was a doctor at Severance Hospital and started its Medical Records Department.
The garden surrounding the monument honours the Very Rev. Dr. Sang Chul Lee Born in Siberia in 1924 and educated in Korea and Canada, he served as Moderator for the United Church of Canada from 1988-1990 and as Chancellor of Victoria University from 1992-1998.
