?The statue is of a steelworker holding a rod of steel. It sits atop a planter on Railway Ave in downtown.

The plaque reads: "Gone are the days when steelworkers in the rolling mill toiled in extreme heat. catching red-hot steel rods equipped only with a pair of tongs, cotton gloves and leather shin guards. Today's steelworker is a pace setter in manufacturing, innovation, modernization, safety, and technology, and a model and hope for workers everywhere.

The local mill opened in 1910 and was an early supplier to the state's gold dredging, ship building, and lumbering industries. The Pittsburg plant was a major force in the construction of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, Hoover Dam, military production in both world wars, and a pioneer in trade unionism, and continues as a major steel supplier in the west."

The steelworker has been vital in the regions economic, social, cultural and civic life. The steel mill attracted people from every part of the country, helping to make Pittsburg a truly cosmopolitan city and giving our city the title of Steel City of the West.

The joint venture between the Pohang Iron and Steel of South Korea and the United States steel that created USS Posco Industries in 1986 has resulted in a completely refurbished and modernized plant that will keep the steel industry a vital part of the local economy well into the 21rst century."
