This state Recreation Area encompasses the Spruce Run Reservoir along with 15 miles of shoreline which serves as a backup reservoir during periods of extended droughts. Spruce Run is the third largest resevoir in the state after Round Valley and Wanaque. The recreation area is used for a variety of activities, including boating, swimming and fishing.
The Division of Fish and Wildlife stocks the reservoir with trout hatchlings for fishing. Among the species that can be caught are northern pike, smallmouth bass, channel cats, largemouth bass, and carp.
Entrance fees are charged per vehicle from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

The park contains playgrounds, sports fields, basketball courts, a bathouse, and a boat ramp. Trails in the park are used for hiking, in-line skating, jogging, and biking.
