Virginia: A Guide to the Old Dominion as part of Tour 20 (U.S. Route 50):
The MEMORIAL AMPHITHEATRE is a large open auditorium of white marble, designed by Carrère and Hastings after the theater of Dionysus at Athens and the Roman theater at Orange, France. At the east end is a pavilion (open 9-4:30 daily), containing a reception room, trophy room, stage, museum, and chapel.
The amphitheater is home to three major annual memorial services. These occur on Easter Sunday, Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Many consider the services at Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater to be the nation's official ceremonies to honor all American service members who serve to keep the United States free. Many military organizations also conduct annual memorial services in the amphitheater.
