No. 4144 belongs to the 5101 class and was built by Great Western Railway Swindon in 1946. It has a wheel arrangement of 2-6-2T (Side Tank) and was withdrawn from service in 1965. It came into the Great Western Society collection in 1974 and was first used in preservation in 1997.
This is a 'Prairie' locomotive with a less powerful engine to No. 6106. It was one of several rescued from a scrapyard in 1970. When fully restored in 1997 it made an appearance at the 'Steam on the Met' operation on the Metropolitan Line in the London Underground in 1998.
