Highmore is the County Seat of Hyde County, South Dakota, and is located on the junction of US Highway 14 and SD Highway 47.
Its population is 714 as of July 2008, and shows a 16% decrease from the 2000 census.
The town was settled by German, Norwegian, Irish, English, and Czech peoples and was incorporated on June 30, 1882.
Three traditions give the name of the town, one says it was named for its elevation, another says it was named for a surveyor, and a third says a foreign worker looked at the rising slope and said “high more, high more”.
The school is consolidated with Harrold, a small town several miles to the west. Its mascot is the Pirates.
Highmore is a helpful, family orientated community. When in Highmore you will find; 50 businesses, baseball field, two parks, a swimming pool, a rodeo arena, hunting and fishing, and camping facilities. Highmore has a large group of civic organizations including; Volunteer Fire Department, Women's Civic League, Hyde County Action Club, Jaycees, 4-H Clubs, Highmore Booster Club, Extension Club, Roundup Club, Ministerial Association, and Development Corporation.
A notable native is Royal C. Johnson, after whom the South Dakota Veterans Hospital was named.
