C.S. Harrison Select Nursery was established by Rev. Charles Simmons Harrison (1832-1919) to provide income during his later years. When he "retired" to York in the late 1890s he was "starting over." He took out a mortgage to build a
new home (WM7D9X). He worked hard and grew the business; he was in his 82nd year when this ad was published.
C.S. Harrison is a fascinating character in York's history. He is remembered by iris fanciers for his pioneering work to document and develop iris varieties. In Franklin, Nebraska, he is remembered as founder of the Franklin Academy. His writings about ornamental plantings and landscaping have the hortatory tone of religious preaching. The same newspaper page containing this ad for the Select Nursery carries a letter he wrote describing the origin and development of flowering cannas.
