The Cranesville Subarctic Swamp is a unique biological environment. The surrounding terrain has created a frost zone which has left a bog supporting life not normally seen in the area. The swamp contains diverse plant life such as pitcher plants, nodding ladies' tresses, tamarack trees, cranberries, and narrow-leaved gentian. The swamp and surrounding woods are also home to many interesting bird species. The boardwalk allows visitors to walk through this diverse environment and see the species up close.
The area was named one of the first National Natural Landmarks by the National Park Service in 1965. The area covers over 1700 acres.
