This is one of a group of three sculptures commissioned by George F. Parkman on the Boston Common. They were crafted by Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio di Biccari, dedicated in 1961. This depicts a male figure seated on a globe with a book and compass.

Three male figures symbolizing Learning, Religion, and Industry, in a salute to Boston's energy, scholarship, and spiritual life. Industry is represented by a figure operating a jackhammer. Learning is represented by a seated figure measuring with a compass held in his proper right hand while reading from an open book held in his proper left hand. He is seated on a globe. Religion is represented by a kneeling figure with his arms extended and his face turned to the sky. Each figure is installed on a separate base.
