The history of this urban park goes back to 1765 when Boston citizens tore down the British Stamp Tax Office that stood here. It was formally named in 1973 for the French Revolution, and then in 1966 the Hungarian Revolution Memorial was erected here

LIBERTY SQUARE

August 14, 1765
British Stamp Tax Office located n this Square
torn down in an act of protest by angry Boston citizens.
Within a year, England repealed the Stamp Act.

January 24, 1973
Liberty Square formally named to commemorate
the French Revolution. A festive banquet was held here,
and a 21 gun salute fired to mark the occasion.

October 23, 1986

Hungarian Revolution Memorial dedicated
in honor of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the
freedom fighters who engaged in this heroic struggle.
