Orientation panel at Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe visitors terrace depicts and describes Pasterze Glacier and surrounding mountains. The Pasterze Glacier, the longest glacier in Austria and in the Eastern Alps reaching from the 3 453 m Johannisberg to 2 100 m above sea level, is approximately 8.4 km long. The Pasterze Glacier lies within the Hohe Tauern mountain range in Carinthia, directly beneath Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.
The Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe is the touristic centre (and the highest point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road) in the middle of Hohe Tauern National Park. The palce is named after the visit of Kaiser Franz-Josef made here in 1856. Upon arrival you stand directly before Austria´s highest mountain, the Grossglockner (3 798 m), with a view of the longest glacier in the eastern Alps, the Pasterze.
Here, at the platform next to the visitors centre, you can find ten coin-op monoculars offering details of the Grossglockner stunning panorama.
