The Thinking Doughboy by artist Karl Illava, is to commemorate the soldiers of WWI. A beautifully done sculpture on a square granite base in the heart of Gloversville. There are 2 sculptures here and the Lucius N. Littauer sculpture/monument should be used as a landmark to help you locate The Thinking Doughboy. He sits back in a little farther at the front of Estes School. I've driven by here many times and never saw it until I stopped to waymark the good doctor. Even then I was so caught up in taking pictures of the doctor's monument that I didn't notice this one a mere 20 feet away. So keep your eyes open.
To find this one take Rt.30 north from Johnstown into Gloversville. Turn left onto Rt.29a and follow this all the way to the Gloversville 4 corners. Take a right onto Main Street and in less then 1,000 feet you'll see the sculptures on the right. Happy Waymarking, Swizzle & Family
