The metallic sculpture rises above the pavement near the RNLI Headquarters to display a remarkable symbol of dedication.

This is the first memorial to remember these brave people in one place in the United Kingdom. The RNLI are all volunteers who selflessly save other people risking their lives to do so.

Showing a person in a boat saving a person from the water the sculpture is a basic, bold and simple statement of the history and the future of the RNLI. Sam Holland, the sculptor, symbolises courage, loss and remembrance embedded in hope.

We arrived to find this sculpture wrapped up in plastic awaiting its dedication day by HRH The Duke of Kent. Faithfully we returned to photograph the sculpture the next day after the special service where the names of those who have died were remembered and unravelled. We were able to photograph a poster thanks to the RNLI shop advertising the event.

At the dedication a screen displayed details of how the sculpture was made and a lifeboat sat quietly in the background.

The dedication ceremony was documented on the local television news and featured in the Daily Echo. There is also an article here (visit link)
