The Beacon Publishing Company began publication of Akron's first daily newspaper, the Akron Daily Beacon, on December 6, 1869. The Knight group began in 1903 when Charles Landon (C.L.) Knight bought the Akron Beacon Journal. Knight, considered a brilliant writer, began training his son John at an early age to replace him. John S. Knight worked as copy boy and reporter, then went to college and fought in World War I. In 1919 at age 25, he joined the Beacon Journal's staff and became managing editor in 1925. Under John Knight’s tenure, many newspapers were acquired by the Knight group. On November 30, 1974, Knight and Ridder (originated in 1875) merged to become Knight-Ridder Newspapers, Inc. In early 2006, The McClatchy Company bought Knight-Ridder Newspapers, but later that year sold the Akron Beacon Journal to Black Press Ltd.

In 1930, Scripps Howard Newspaper had a new, Moderne Style building built for the Akron Times-Press. Its architect was Howell & Thomas. In 1938, Times-Press ceased operation and the Akron Beacon Journal acquired the building, located at E Exchange and S High sts. The building has a three tiered corner tower representing the Scripps Howard lighthouse logo. Torch motifs ornament the banded tower. Swaged lanterns are over the entries. Buttress piers contain windows above the basement. The walls are constructed of limestone.
