South of the Border is, of course, one of the places every traveler must stop at least once while wandering around the country. This oasis of commerce in the country consists of t-shirt shops, lodging, restaurants, ice cream stands, a sombrero lookout tower and other neon-bathed structures.
The idea for South of the Border materialized due to it's location on the opposite side of the North Carolina border. The enterprise began as a beer stand owned by Alan Schafer - south of the 'dry' counties in NC. He ran with the border concept & added restaurants, rooms, shops, etc. - eventually creating a small 'town' ...and one of the must-see 'tourist traps' in the U.S.
Don't forget your t-shirt/glass/bumper sticker !
