A very active American Legion post in a small town called Higgens-Jessen American Legion Post 88.

Higgens-Jessen Post was chartered in 1919. The first Commander was H.H. Moore.
Located in northern Brookings County, South Dakota, White has a population of 512, as of July 2008. This reflects a decrease in population of about 3.4% from the 2000 census.
The town was incorporated on August 20, 1887, and is made up of German, Norwegian, Irish, Dutch, and Danish ancestries.
The town of White is small enough not to be able to support a full-blown school system. A number of years ago it combined with Astoria and Toronto to form Deubrook Area Schools. Preschool students are sent to Astoria, elementary students go to Toronto, and high school students are bussed to White.
Churches in town in include: St. Paul Catholic Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Pioneer Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, and United Prebyterian Church.
This American Legion post is very active and participates in Legion programs such as American Legion Baseball, High School Oratorical Contest, American Legion Boys State, and Avenue of Flags. They also provide an honor guard for veterans funerals.
Two department commanders have come from this post.
They are looking into building a veterans memeorial in the near future.
Their membership goal for 2010 is 102.
A number of years ago, the American Legion donated the land for the new community building. The community decided to give the Legion a portion of the building to used for their meeting hall.
