Au mois de mai 1929, on inaugure un nouveau lien entre les rives de la rivière Saint-Maurice. C’est l’inauguration du pont suspendu de Grand-Mère, un ouvrage qui a constitué une première en ingénierie au Canada. Il a été construit par la Laurentide Pulp and Paper, mais c’est la ville de Grand-Mère qui a déboursé les 400 000$ nécessaires à sa réalisation. Le péage a été aboli en 1944.
