St. Germans Viaduct carries the Great Western Railway line over the River Tiddy. It is 945 feet long, 106 feet high & is composed of 13 stone arches.
It was built in 1908 to replace an earlier viaduct designed by the great engineer I.K.Brunel. There are 41 viaducts on the lines between Plymouth ,Penzance & Falmouth. All were originally built to a single track design and used a large proportion of wood. Brunel warned against this type of construction method, all were replaced between 1881 & 1934.
The best place to view the bridge from is on the footpath at St. Germans Quay. The coordinates above are for the location where the footpath passes under one of the arches.
