In Summer of 2001, the cast and crew of “Dawson's Creek” descended on Duke University in Durham to shoot scenes for the show’s fifth season. The series was set in New England, but production was actually based in Wilmington, NC.
In Season 5, Dawson, Joey, Jen and Pacey have graduated from high school. Dawson (James Van Der Beek) has left Capeside for USC and film school. Joey (Katie Holmes) has moved to Boston and is attending an "Ivy League School." (Think Harvard.) Her roommate is Audrey (Busy Philipps).
Duke University's West Campus has architecture that makes it a good match for an Ivy League college in New England. Rather than travel all the way to Massachusetts, the cast and crew made the three hour drive from Wilmington to Durham to shoot some scenes.
This episode was the second episode of Season 5 and is titled "The Lost Weekend". It originally aired on The WB on October 8, 2001.
In the episode, Dawson has come to Boston to visit Joey at school. While Joey tries to drop a class, Joey’s roommate Audrey gives Dawson a campus tour. The location of this scene is the Quad at Duke, just outside the West Union Building. The obelisk that Busy Philipps is touching was placed for the show and is not at the location in real life.
