Memphian Theater - Memphis, Tn - Elvis on Waymarking.com

In the 1960s Elvis used to rent the Memphian Theater, now Playhouse on the Square, to watch the latest flicks with his friends. These viewings were often all night affairs. It was the only way for him to have such a gathering out of view of the public.

It is located at 51 S Cooper Street just north of Union Avenue.
Though its days as a movie theater ended more than two decades ago, the Memphian remains in use today, as one of the city's best-known smaller live theaters, the Playhouse on the Square, which it has served as since 1986.

That was the year the vacant Memphian was renovated and transformed by the Circuit Playhouse Company into the showcase for legitimate theatre, musicals, comedy and children's theatre it is today.

In 1992 and 1997, the Playhouse expanded into empty storefronts ajoining the old movie theater.

The Playhouse also now offers acting classes in its facilities, and a bar for pre-and-post show refreshments.

Since its inception in 1969, the Playhouse has grown in popularity and acclaim, and it was only recently hailed by the Memphis Flyer as "The best live theater in Memphis."
