On July 22, 2008 Youngstown State University was rocked by a local storm. Damage was heavy that day from straight lined winds that topped off at over 60 miles per hour. It only rained for twenty minutes, but the rainfall total was two and a half inches. The campus sustained widespread flooding. There were no personal injuries as a result of this storm, but tree near Kilcawley House was snapped off seven feet above ground. After extensive cleanup this tree was carved into Youngstown State University's Mascot, Pete the Penguin.
Today the area is back to it's natural beauty, and Pete stands tall. I'm not sure how many people who walk past Pete know his origins, but that storm was surly a day to remember.
There is a You tube posting of the storm that can bee seen by following the link. (
