The best known of Vermont's founding fathers, Ethan Allen built his home in the rich farmland of Burlington's Intervale and lived here with his wife, Fanny, for the last two years of his life (1787-1789).

The barn was built sometime in the 1930s, and was used as a community barn for hay storage during World War II. It now houses administrative offices, a gift shop and a replica of the tavern in which Allen and the Green Mountain Boys held their planning sessions.

Also on the grounds are community gardens, nature trails and a picnic area.

The homestead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
