Fort Belknap Indian Reservation is homeland to the Gros Ventre and the Assiniboine Tribes. Fort Belknap is located forty miles south of the Canadian border and twenty miles north of the Missouri River, which is the route of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Fort Belknap reservation is the fourth largest Indian reservation in Montana.
Fort Belknap was created by an Act of Congress on 1 May, 1888 and the Fort Belknap Agency was established at its present location, four miles southeast of the present town of Harlem, Montana. The reservation encompasses an area consisting of 675,147 acres, which extends approximately 28 miles east and west and 35 miles north and south. The land is mostly rolling plains.
Did you know? Assiniboine call themselves "Nakoda," meaning "The Generous Ones," and the Gros Ventre call themselves A'aninin, which means "The White Clay People."
