This fire hydrant/ water fountain at Rogers Dog Park, East 34th and East L Streets, has been awarded the Maintenance Idea of the Year by the International Northwest Parks & Recreation Association (INPRA). A 1962 fire hydrant was converted to a dog's fantasy watering hole on a bone-shaped cement pad. The two-level fountain even has a place for dog owners to quench their thirst.

Tacoma's first neighborhood dog park officially opened at 9 a.m. on October 16.This one-acre area has been fenced and prepared for off-leash dogs at Rogers Park, East 34th and East L Streets. Dogs and their owners are invited to visit this painted hydrant.
Park district maintenance crews fashioned a special water fountain just for the park. Originally conceived as a hose bib coming out of the ground, Mike Nelson, park district plumber, said when staff got together to talk about the water fountain it was "ruff at first" but with people "barking out ideas" it evolved into a dog's fantasy watering hole. The 1962 fire hydrant converted to water fountain is installed on a bone-shaped cement pad. It appears several dogs have already discovered the pad, leaving their paw prints and names in the cement.
Metro Parks Tacoma developed the dog park in cooperation with the Eastside Neighborhood Action Council, which requested the park.
