The present Missouri State Capitol was dedicated in 1924 and is noted for its fine works of art there.
Recently I was on the south lawn of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City waiting for darkness to fall and an outdoor movie “Singing in the Rain” to begin. In the fading light as the sun was setting in the west, I realized how beautiful and luminous the figures in the pediment over the main entrance to the capitol building looked in that half-light.
It turns out that the artist responsible for this great frieze was none other than Adolph Alexander Weinman of New York, noted for his architectural design and the design of medals and coins associated with the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and U.S. silver coins--- including the particularly beautiful “Walking Liberty” half-dollar.
The pediment over the main entrance of the capitol building is an excellent example of his creativity. This great gable group is remarkable for its conception, its symmetry, and its rhythmical vitality of its action.
Go see it, it is as grand as a visit to the great buildings of Washington, DC, such as the Jefferson Memorial that also has the sculpture of A.A. Weinman on its pediment.
