The largest gravity earth dam east of the Mississippi.

The reservoir is used to hold coal ash residual from the coal burning power plant in Shippingport, Pennsylvania. The ash is transported in a 7-mile tunnel that connects the power plant with the reservoir.

In a 2009 survey, the dam has been defined as strategically putting at risk the livelihood of 50,000 people, in case if the dam should fail, and the toxic sludge slide downstream.

The dark blue color of the water in the reservoir, as seen from aerial views, is due to the high content of selenium, with is toxic to fish.
