In 1846, Col. Alfonso Boone, grandson of Daniel Boone, emigrated to Oregon with his large family. In 1847, they established Boone's Ferry near this marker. The thriving community of Boone’s Landing sprang up on the rivers north shore. The same year, the eldest son Jesse began clearing a path, called Boones Ferry Road, connecting Portland with Salem.
Ferries cross the Willamette River for 107 years carrying thousands of horses, cows, wagons, buggies, cars and people. Ferry service was offered day and night. Jesse Boone operated the ferry until his death in 1872. Afterwards others operated the ferry. Boone's Ferry was decommissioned in 1954, shortly after the completion of the Boone Bridge.
