I hadn't noticed this trig previously, but I was parked here today to find a few nearby caches, which gave me a good opportunity to also waymark the spot. This trig is right next to one of the old Mt Stromlo telescopes that was burnt beyond repair in the 2003 bushfires. There is now a mobile telephone tower in the immediate vicinity.

Some more information courtesy of 2 Leg Drive - thanks a lot for this - it is much more interesting than my uninspired description!:

Mt Stromlo Trig station 770m

The trig station is located at the highest point of Mt Stromlo. Just next to the Satellite Laser ranging facility and the old burnt out Oddie Telescope building.

Mt Stromlo has played a key part in the history of Canberra. Over the approximate 100 years history of Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) this mountain and surrounds have shaped the way the region developed. Some of the many reasons for this are listed below.

Mt Stromlo is the site of the first Commonwealth building constructed in the ACT. This was a dome to house the Oddie Telescope in 1911. This began a long tradition as an observatory site. Observing still continues today (tonight). Since the 2003 bushfires most new development has moved to Siding Springs.

Mt Stromlo is the location of Canberra Main potable water treatment works. Without fresh water Canberra would have never grown at all.

The Mt Stromlo trig station is the ACT Meridian of Origin. All point in the ACT are measured from here.

The Stromlo Forest park surrounds Mt Stromlo and is a is a world-class multi-use, recreational sporting facility available to both recreational and professional users. It boasts a purpose built event pavilion, criterium cycling circuit, grass cross country running track, equestrian tracks and mountain bike tracks to suit any level of rider.

A place of devastating and spectacular fire that included the tragic 18th of January 2003 fires.

And last but not least. Views from this point are spectacular. Canberra is at your feet. The views are endless.
