Marker Title: Original Springfield Cotton Mill. Marker text: Third oldest textile manufacturing plant in Scotland County by Mark Morgan in 1982. Burned down in 1917. Located here.
This is the once was home of the third cotton mill constructed in Scotland County. This gave rise to the local mill village called Springfield. Many generations of Scotland County residents have called the Springfield and adjacent Bayfield home. These folks are a close knit group that work, play, and worship together. Recent changes in trade legislation and the economy have caused some drastic changes in the area. Across from this sign is the site of a former Springs Mills textile plant that is undergoing demolition. With the plant closed, many of the area are out of work.
