Per "Touring the East Tennesse Backroads" by Carolyn Sakowski (Page 35), we learn that "Henry Massengill, Sr., was one of the first settlers in East Tennessee, came to this area in 1769. He built the log cabin that stands next to the mansion today. Between 1840 and 1842," Issac DeVault built the mansion that overlooks the countryside today. In 1937, the Massengill family bought the farmstead back.

From Historic Sites of Sullivan County complied by Muriel Spoden, we find out the log cabin was probably for the plantation overseer.

As a footnote, I really do recommend Sakowski book as an interesting guide for driving around the area to see the historical sites. Parts have been scanned by Google, but a hard copy has been great while trying to find this NRHP locations.
