On the first of February, 1845, the Republic of Texas chartered Baylor University. The town of Independence was selected as the site.
On the eighteenth of May, 1846, twenty-four boys and girls began taking co-ed classes in temporary facilities on Academy Hill. Over the next five years, the curriculum expanded and a new building was constructed on Windmill Hill to the south.
The boys were moved to the Windmill Hill building. The Female Department stayed on Academy Hill in an imposing three-story stone structure.
These columns mark the location where Baylor University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the State of Texas and the largest Baptist University in the world, first opened its doors.
In 1866, Baylor Female College moved to Belton and became the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
