To commemorate the request for a cup of coffee as the first words spoken in protest against segregated eating facilities, eight North Carolina artists were selected to design individual bronze cups to be displayed at strategic points around the city of Greensboro to build public awareness, promote conversation and encourage dialogue.

"Cup Of Freedom"

Artist: Charles Jenkins, Greensboro, NC
Location: International Civil Rights Center and Museum, 134 S. Elm St., Greensboro, NC

Artist's remarks:
"I put the guys sitting down at the top of the cup, like it's a counter, and I put under them an American flag. The flag was there because they were doing it for freedom - the freedom to sit and drink coffee, without having to worry about race."
Civil Right Type: Race (includes U.S. Civil Rights movement)
