To commemorate the request for a cup of coffee as the first words spoken in protest against segregated eating facilities, eight North Carolina artists were selected to design individual bronze cups to be displayed at strategic points around the city of Greensboro to build public awareness, promote conversation and encourage dialogue.

Artist's remarks:
"It is such a powerful moment to capture: when someone realizes something just isn't right and decides to do something about it. This thought animated my design. A cup of coffee to wake up the world to injustice."
