In a massive public works project undertaken in the 1930's and 1940's, the city of Pittsburgh built several hundred public stairways connecting neighborhoods and streets with other streets in lower and flatter parts of the city. All these steps are built with concrete slabs pegged on support concrete walls, and metal handrails painted with Aqua color paint.
The Worth Street steps connect the upper part of Glen Arden Drive with Wilkings Avenue below, where mass transit buses travel and a bus stop is located right at the bottom of the steps.
These steps are notable for the fact that they are mentioned in Annie Dillard's book, "An American Childhoold", and also because they were remembered by the historian David McCullough, with the steps being three houses from the house he grew up in.
