Starting from Beaver shelter in the North Park county park in the northern part of Allegheny county, the trail ends on the north-east corner of the county in another county park, Harrison Hills county park.
Passing at half point at the homestead of Rachel Carson, known and published environmentalist, the trail is mostly on private property. Once a year, about 400 hikers hike its full length in one day, called the RCT Challenge.
