Long Description:
It's hard to miss him as you make your way from the airport terminal to the next levels down. There he is, in full uniform, ready to greet you to Pittsburgh, along with a Pittsburgh Steelers football player (alas, I don't remember the name). He seems out of place, and pale. The plaque at his feet identifies him as George Washington. The plaque further reads:

"On May 28, 1754, here in western Pennsylvania, 22-year-old George Washington fired the first shots of the French and Indian War - the first global war - that profoundly shaped the world we know today...and launched the career of the first president of the United States."

According to another web site, the area was at the time part of Virginia. The governor of Virginia dispatched Washington to this area to tell the French stay out of this area. Near Erie, PA, a letter from the governor was given to the French Commander, and a letter from the Commander was given to Washington to deliver to the governor. Washington went back to the governor with the letter (basically, the French weren't moving), and then returned to the Pittsburgh five months later with a larger army. In the meantime, the French had built Ft. Duquesne, but Washington was able to capture a scouting detachment, and, later, took control of the fort, renaming it Ft. Pitt.

This statue is located in the Skymall section of the terminals, at the center of the 'X' (the waymark is approximately at this location). Only air travelers can see this statue, since it is behind the security lines.

The closest entrance to the terminal is to the west and is near the place where buses stop. The included web site link of the airport map should help you locate the statue.
