Located on the Hemlock Trail in Salt Spring State Park in Northeast PA, Penny Rock is a large slab of sandstone with layers about 1/2 inch apart. The rock is about 4 ft high and 15 ft by 15 ft. Locals (and visitors like us) hammer pennies and other coins into the thin spaces between the layers for good luck. If you remove a penny or coin it brings bad luck. There are some smooth rocks to assist in hammering in your penny.
You can listen to and view nearby waterfalls here. Some of the Hemlocks in this stretch of woods are 500-600 years old. If you love old growth woods, this is the place!
The website below describes the Hemlock Trail. It was locals who told us of the good luck/bad luck.
Additional Requirement?: You need to hammer a penny (or other coin) into the layers for good luck. Bad luck befalls those removing money.
What's the Real Story?: Just a local superstition.
