I found this gem of a bench mark with my family on a vacation trip exploring Colorado. It is located in the
Colorado National Monument at Cold Shivers Point.
This
U.S. Geological Survey bench mark is sitting horizontal on a white rock ledge which is facing the Columbus Canyon. Stamping is
CC11 1934 ELEVATION ABOVE SEA
6106 FEET. The color is bronze and someone scratched
E.A.F. on the bench mark. The bench mark is not listed in the
NGS database.
To reach this bench mark you have to enter the Colorado National Monument. You can use the West (Frutia) Entrance or the East (Grand Junction) Entrance. Drive along the Rim Rock Drive until you come to the parking lot of Cold Shivers Point. If you are comming from west it's the last overlook area, if you are comming from east it's the first overlook area. From there just walk west for not more than 100 meters until you come to the Columbus Canyon. Look left for the white rock ledge. You can see the bench mark from a safe place. But please be very careful if you try to get a closer look (like me). My family couldn't face it because it's going vertical down right next to the bench mark. Remember, this point is called "Cold Shivers"! Therefore a closeup photo of this bench mark is not required, but please at least one photo from the distance.
