In 1969 Jack Nelson at age 39, had worked for South Bend Tackle for several years. He decided to pursue his lifelong dream to start his own tackle shop. Then he and wife Patty opened the first Jack’s Bait & Tackle on the corner of Lucy Street & U.S.1. On their first day, they had made a total of $3.65. They knew it would not be easy. After a few years with business improving, Jack got word that the Florida Turnpike was coming thru Florida City. He knew he had to move his business. He found some “swamp” land that he could rent, so that he did. Jack had the land filled and built what is now Know as “Jack’s”.
Jack always had great knowledge for fishing with a happy attitude. His motto was “The bait & tackle business ain’t going to be easy. You have to work hard and be friendly”.
Today his daughter Jackie Curry, who has since purchased the land, is keeping his legacy alive. There are many generations to come. Grandsons: Jack, Brian, Thomas. Granddaughters: Melissa, Kaitlyn, Tiffany. Great-grandchildren: Mikey & Audrina.
With lots of family we can continue to “Keep fisherman happy”.
