"Alter Kranen" was designed and constructed by the son of the famous architect Balthasar Neumann, Franz Ignaz Neumann, between 1767-1773. The crane works by "human power" with the help of a treadwheel and of several hand pulley sets.
The crane was designed especially for the easy loading of the ships with the local wine. This old crane is one of the most popular sights of town and great place to take photographs of the castle Marienberg and the river Main. The "Alter Kranen" is a rare monument of industrial architecture of the Baroque era and reminds us of the importance of trade on Main river for town Würzburg.
