The lighthouse is 154 metres above the sea on a steep hilltop site giving views out to East Island. Originally built in 1906 on East Island, the lighthouse was moved to the present site in 1922 due to erosion on the island. Automation took place in 1985. The lighthouse is reached by a walking track with a never-ending set of wooden steps well over 700 in total. There are handrails on some parts and a sign warns climbers that the steps are slippery when wet! The stairway commences behind the unused keepers' houses.
East Cape Lighthouse is reached from Te Araroa, turning onto East Cape Road and following the coastline.
It is the most easterly Lighthouse in the world!
