Cathedral of the Pines began as a memorial to the founder's son, a B-17 crewman killed in action in 1944, when his aircraft was shot down over Germany. The response to a small dedication ceremony planned for this spot, (which was to be his homestead upon his return from combat) was much larger than expected, and the original idea grew in scope. Today, the outdoor Cathedral contains structures, plaques, paintings, sculptures, flags, benches, stones, stained glass windows, crafts, memorabilia, and a bell tower, all dedicated to those who served, and those who supported the effort - including some distinctive references to women in wartime. Please view the entire gallery for this waymark, I've done my best to give a sampler of the many visuals here. The outdoor altar is recognized by the United States Congress as a national memorial dedicated to all American war dead. The Cathedral's website is a wonderful resource of information - ( visit link)
