Cathedral of the Pines began as a memorial to the founder's son, a B-17 crewman killed in action in 1944, when his aircraft was shot down over Germany. The response to a small dedication ceremony planned for this spot, (which was to be his homestead upon his return from combat) was much larger than expected, and the original idea grew in scope. Today, the outdoor Cathedral contains structures, plaques, paintings, sculptures, flags, benches, stones, stained glass windows, crafts, memorabilia, and a bell tower, all dedicated to those who served, and those who supported the effort - including some distinctive references to women in wartime. Description of Memorial:
The Cathedral is located on a hilltop, and within it's several acres contains a museum, a bell tower, an outdoor altar, picnic area, cemetary, gardens, walkways and chapels, surrounded by farm fields, woodlands, and three ponds. The Cathedral has a stunning view of Mount Monadnock. It hosts numerous events each year, including weddings, unit gatherings, services and blessings, meetings, addresses and ceremonies.
