Here the New and Gauley rivers unite to form the Great Kanawha River. Piers still stand of the old bridge destroyed by the Confederate troops in 1861. Here Thomas Dunn English, author of the ballad "Ben Bolt", wrote "Gauley River".

This marker was placed by the West Virginia Historic Commission. The year of placement is unknown because this information is covered by a metal reinforcing plate that runs across the bottom edge of the sign.
