The tower clock for the Courthouse (now the Pioneer Museum) was supplied and installed by the E. Howard Clock Company of Boston, Massachusetts. The original motor power was supplied by a water operated air pressure pump. At some time a new method using weights was adopted. This required cutting holes in three floors of the tower to allow passage of the weights and cables. Now the clock is powered by a small electric motor.
Placed in 1903, the clock has been continuously running since it was first installed. With the exception of the two short periods when power for the clock was changed over from water to weights and finally to a standard electric motor.
If you stand next to the statue of Katharine Lee Bates and look up you will get the dramatic view of the entry to the building and three stories above you see the clock. The waymark coordinates are for the location of where the default photo was taken.
