This fighter, an F14A, numbered 162591, is in a corner of the outdoor display area of the Quonset Air Museum. The shark painted nose gives a menacing appearance to the craft, while the designs on the black tail fins give it an ominous look. This aircraft was once part of the venerable "Grim Reapers," the Navy's last Fleet Replacement Squadron for F-14s, which was decommissioned in 2005. There is a date of 1-25-02 with the words, "Last Ride Baby", which likely means that the aircraft was last flown on that date.
F-14s were considered one of the most versatile fighters in the world. The aircraft could be launched from aircraft carriers and could maneuver well, and carry bombs. The aircraft was used in several conflicts, including both Gulf Wars. F14s were featured in the movie, "Top Gun," in the 1980s.
This particular aircraft is located on a concrete pad outside the museum's hanger. No plaque exists, yet, for the craft.
