A $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation in 1912 made possible the Thorntown Public Library. The library was temporarily housed in the school building until the permanent building was constructed. Designed by Indianapolis architect Wilson B. Parker, the library was built in 1914. In a dedication ceremony on 13 January 1915, Parker presented the keys to the building to the president of the library board.
The library was used in mostly the same form until an expansion project began on 4 August 2003. A search of the Thorntown Public Library board meeting minutes and Friends of the Library newsletters chronicles the expansion project. Contractors and volunteers worked to do remodeling in the Carnegie section of the library, and a new wing added over 10,000 square feet to the building. In 2007, a fountain was installed near the west entrance. The Thorntown Public Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as building #86002708.
