Per the book
Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia by Victor N. Phillips, pages 12-14, James King purchased 1600 acres of land in 1814 for $10,000 in gold (equivalent to $3.5 million today) delivered by horseback to Frankfort, KY. The tract of land included what was the former Fort Shelby constructed by Evan Shelby (see also TN historical marker Waymark WM68KR). James did not build a house here because his wife objected as there was a former slave cemetery in the fort.
Subsequent relative E.W. King did build this Queen Anne design home on this high ground.
The home is vacant and per a sign in the yard, to become the Bristol Regional Museum. No work has begun.
